POTS vs Orthostatic Hypotension

This weeks question

What is the difference between POTS and orthostatic hypotension?

My answer

While POTS and orthostatic hypotension are both types/symptoms of dysautonomia and both cause dizziness upon standing, they are quite different conditions.

POTS stands for Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome which essentially means "too high of a heart rate on standing" or "too high of a jump in heart rate when moving from lying or sitting to standing"

Orthostatic hypotension means "too low of blood pressure on standing"

While the first line of treatment for both is increasing hydration and electrolyte intake, it is important to know which, if either of these issues you are having to get proper treatment in both the long and short term!

While it is likely a cardiologist who will diagnose you with either, it's important to go to one familiar with these conditions who understand that they can even happen in the "young and healthy".
